My top three European countries!

Updated: Jul 21, 2023

According to the United Nations, there are currently 44 countries that fall within European borders. I must admit that upon first seeing this figure a few years ago, I felt somewhat sceptical that there could be so many countries on our relatively small continent; however, when you consider the fact that the tiny states of the Vatican City, San Marino, Andorra and Liechtenstein all constitute countries within their own right, it can come as no surprise that the country count finishes on such a high figure.

In this, my introductory blog post, I will list my three favourite European destinations, and the reasons why these countries have left such an impression on me:

3) Spain.

I am well aware that Spain is the second most visited country in Europe by tourists (second only to France); however, this country of just under 50 million people is perhaps one of the most diverse within Europe. From the rainy north with its lush green vegetation that expands across the Basque Country, Asturias and Galicia, to the swealteringly hot south with its scorched earth landscapes and architecture influenced by its former Arabic rulers all those hundreds of years ago, Spain is a melting pot of different cultures and cuisines, and is definitely worthy of a spot in my top three European destinations.

Plaza de España, Seville

Although a large number of tourists are content with their package holidays on either the Costa Brava or the Costa del Sol, Spain in fact has countless attractions, many of which are not too far off the beaten track.

My particular picks from this vast country would be:

- The largely mountainous region of Asturias in the north with its picturesque beaches and charming cities of Gijón and Oviedo;

- The vast southern region of Andalucía with its main cities of Cádiz, Granada and Sevilla, which are all unique in their own right, and are all worth a visit;

- The city of Valencia: perhaps my favourite city in Spain, it plays host to the famous 'Fallas' carnival every year in the month of March. It is also the birthplace of Paella and is home to a long coastline that is within walking distance from the city centre.

2) Italy

Much like Spain, Italy is also a country that is frequented by many millions of tourists every year.

Rimini, Italy

Extremely diverse both culturally and gastronomically from north to south, Italy has a huge amount to offer to foreign visitors, whether it be for those who are in search of high-end boutiques in the northern city of Milano, or those looking for some warmth and relaxation on one of the idyllic beaches on the southern island of Sardegna.

Italy is also home to arguably the best cuisine in the world, whether it be pizza, pasta, risotto, or freshly caught fish, Italian cuisine caters for all tastes.

1) Malta

Malta is a country that I only recently discovered earlier this year, and despite its small size, is definitely worth its spot in my top 3.

Colonised by various countries over its long history, Malta is a melting pot of different cultures. Periods of English, French and Italian colonisation are particularly noticeable when it comes to Maltese cuisine and architecture, as well as the Maltese language. The lasting English influence also mean that the Maltese drive on the left and that English is also an official language on the island, and is spoken fluently by the vast majority of locals.

Due to its proximity with Africa, Malta enjoys a warm climate all through the year, meaning that it is a popular destination for tourists all year round.

Valletta, Malta

Valletta is its charming capital, and the Upper Barrakka gardens are home to perhaps the best view in all of Malta. Valletta's narrow and winding streets are well worth a visit, and due to its relatively small size, may be navigated in just a single day for those on a strict schedule.

For those beach lovers amongst us, you will have to venture outside of Valletta in order to find what you are looking for; however, due to its small size and excellent transport links, Malta can be easily navigated, whether it be by car or public transport. One of the most popular beaches on the island of Malta is "Ghajn Tuffieha Bay" beach, and has obtained Blue Flag status.
